When I am Old and Gray

When I am old and gray,

I will splash around in the muddy quay,

Uncaring of the stains and stares.

When I am old and gray,

I will stand in the middle of the road on a rainy day,

Oblivious to the wetness and the glares.

When I am old and gray

I will dance on the pavements on a happy day,

Unmindful to the knees and the shame.

When I am old and gray,

I will sing my favorites out of tune on spring day,

Unconcerned for the lyrics and exclaims.

When I am old and gray,

I will shoot from my mouth all through the day,

Thoughtless of the results and pain.

When I am old and gray

I will walk around without makeup all day,

Careless to the face and disdain.

When I am old and gray

I will wear the brightest pales,

Regardless of the mismatch and the grimace.

When I am old and gray

I will be naughty and gay

Irrespective of the pain and hate.

I wonder if you would think me crazy and mad

Or simply ignore me for being senile and sad.

I think I will pretend to be old, now

You will know then, how to smile at me and not scowl.

It will free me,

And it will let you know me.
