Fairy Tales in Life

If you can see the magic in the fairy tale you can face the future

Fairy tales are an integral part of all our childhood memories. The stories that we heard while trying to sleep cuddled up with our mommies are the warmest memories we all treasure in our hearts. Most of us have grown up with a fair sprinkling of fairy tales scattered carefully by our mothers on all of our childhood memories. Ever try and look back and recount episodes of you childhood and you are bound to recollect a thin thread of one of your favorite fairy tale running cunningly through the memory too. That’s the magic of fairy tales, they envelop all your memories in a soft cloud like reminiscences.

Fairy tales about elves, gnomes, witches, prince charming, sleeping beauties, fairy godmothers, evil stepmothers , dragons and the whole plethora of magical beings who are either good or bad. Mostly the fairy tales didn’t have any grey character’s. The evil stepmother had the blackest heart and the fairy godmother was all white.

The magical characters of these fairy tales had a life of their own and each stood for a certain value. The pied piper, the fairy godmother, the Cheshire cat, the mad hatter, Snow white and her seven dwarfs .The beauty of the fairy tales lies in the fact that each one of us has  a different understanding of each of the stories and learn our own separate lessons. They are never the same for two people. It takes a much focused mind and a gentle follow through to grasp the message that each of these fairy tales has for us. Fairy Tales being a sub-genre of folklore are supposed to carry a moral, a teaching. Something the elders wanted to convey to the next generating without sounding like preachers.

Now as we grow up and we look back we realize how each of these fairy tales portrayed an important life issue and was not just a fairy tale but a teaching of what life would be like. The dark forests with their monsters signified our unknown fears. Back then as kids we did not understand these things but as grown-ups if we look back we can understand that the forests in the fairy tales sounded so frightening because we as kids had equated it with our worst fears.

While growing up we believe that - Life itself is the most wonderful Fairy Tale. Little do we know that in life things are mostly a shade of grey and nothing is ever clearly white or black? We forget to learn the subtle message in the fairy tale and end up only believing the superficial beauty of the story.

Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.

Fairy Tales can be enlightening; I have had a most wonderful time reading fairy tales again after being in the realm of the grown-ups. The tales are still the same, though I can now relate well to the subtle message hidden in these tales well. Try for that matter “Alice in Wonderland” the nonsense sounding words of the characters like the  Red Queen, the Cheshire cat, the dormouse….. all have a deep meaning.

 Try these:

Alice I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is 'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!

The Duchess If everybody minded their own business, the world would go around a great deal faster than it does.

The Duchess Tut, tut, child! Everything's got a moral, if only you can find it.

Alice But then, shall I never get any older than I am now? That'll be a comfort, one way -- never to be an old woman -- but then -- always to have lessons to learn!

The Mock Turtle What is the use of repeating all that stuff, if you don't explain it as you go on? It's by far the most confusing thing I ever heard!- To the Parents as they say things to their kids and expect them to understand the meaning without explaining it to them. We all tell them to study, not to play too much, not to shout , but do we ever tell them  why not or why they should?

Alice in Wonderland happens to be one of my all-time favorites still, though I love the rest of them too.

But there is another side of fairy tales too. Bought up on the healthy and I believe a necessary dose of fairy tales, as we grow up we all create our own little fairy tales, small episodes of sheer beauty and utter happiness, something that gives us sunshine on dark cloudy day. These fairy tales are our escape from the mundane grind of our daily lives.

Fairy tales as you would agree are wonderful when you live them the first time around, after that they serve as wonderful memories; something to shine through on dark cloudy days.

They are the moments that you treasure and put away in the nooks of your hearts to be put in safe keeping away from prying eyes that could mar the purity of the moments.

But have you tried to go through your favorite fairy tale, imagining yourself to be the princess/prince in the tale? Try it and after that relieve the darker version of that tale. It’s amazing to be in both the tales, but after they end, you feel robbed.

It’s almost criminal; something that gave you sunshine once is now shrouded in darkness. It’s heart-breaking as you simply cannot get back the wonderfully cozy feeling anymore. All you can recollect is the grimness of darker version. And how would the darker version of the fairy tales come into being? Try out the fantasy that is your fairy tale in real life and you would realize that the forest are scarier and the prince and the villain are difficult to differentiate.

More often than not the villain seems more enticing and charming then the prince who in his own domain is as much of a villain as could be possibly possible

I wonder if it’s God's way of telling us that fairy tales are sacred, leave it  at that. Don’t try and relive them because they would end up being a sad version for sure and you would lose more than you would gain.

A fairy tale in life

With Once upon a time

When happiness just meant peace and beauty

And sadness meant chaos and ugliness.

Now it’s more complicated

Happiness often comes by chasing chaos

And sadness comes in silence.
